SHIMMER Women Athletes – Volume 7 – 22nd October 2006

So it turns out that reviewing lots of non-ROH stuff has really revitalised my passion and desire to watch and write about professional wrestling. I’ve done some puro, some DGUSA, some PWG plus a few other random bits and really enjoyed it – so I thought I’d jump back into SHIMMER as well since I always enjoy their shows when I find the time to check them out. Picking up where I left off last time, we’re at Volume 7…with problems immediately rearing their head since Rebecca Knox, who was supposed to be in the main event, is out injured (and wouldn't compete in a SHIMMER ring again). That cancels their planned Iron Woman Match and leaves Daizee Haze at a loose end for the evening. Thankfully there’s plenty to look forward to lower down the card. Sara Del Rey and Mercedes Martinez want another match to settle their rivalry – but first test their mettle against two newcomers to SHIMMER. Mercedes takes on the hard-hitting Canadian LuFisto, whilst Del Rey faces Nattie Neidhart in what should be a hell of a bout. We also have Nikki Roxx against Lacey (which could be great or could suck depending on what mood Nikki is in), Rain against MsChif and a real test for Amber O’Neal as she locks horns with the leader of the SHIMMER locker room: Allison Danger. Once again we’re in Berwyn, IL. Dave Prazak and Allison Danger will call the majority of the action…

Dave Prazak is backstage and updates everyone on Rebecca Knox’s condition, and lets everyone know it could potentially be career-threatening.

Tiana Ringer vs Lorelei Lee
Neither of these two have particularly impressed me thus far in SHIMMER’s tenure. They are both very much at the shallow end of the talent pool – with Lee in particular looking brutally green at times. Her match with Nikki Roxx on the last show was utterly dreadful. Tiana has looked the more impressive of the two based on previous Volumes.

Tiana has a new look since Volume 4. Lee starts with some more dreadfully basic errors that make me cringe – including taking an eternity to set up her signature Oklahoma roll spot, and bumping before Ringer has even got anywhere near her on a big boot attempt. Ringer starts clobbering her back and is making a game effort to get over as a heel. Lee is jerked out of the corner in rather ugly fashion, splattering down onto her back again. The most interesting thing going is Tiana’s surprising physicality, as she occasionally rattles off a nasty chop or an unprotected crossface strike. Even Lorelei’s chops look f*cking terrible. She manages to connect with a handspring crossbody at least, before Ringer polishes her off with the South Palm Beach Driver at 05:29

Rating - * - I wanted to go DUD on this again because Lee was abysmal, but I liked what Ringer brought to the party so I refrained from going that low on the rating. Tiana was far more memorable here than she was in earlier SHIMMER shows, with a pronounced mean streak that made her very watchable. I know Prazak is a nice guy and he loves to look after these girls when he sees flashes of talent in them – but surely Lorelei has to start getting better at some point to justify her spot?

Daizee Haze is backstage and demands competition since K-Nox backed out. She challenges Cheerleader Melissa to face her in the main event…

Cindy Rogers vs Ariel
Don’t these women normally team up? They were both on the receiving end of an Amazing Kong ass kicking on the last show, so will obviously be keen to rebound strongly here. They both have something likeable about them too. Cindy has extremely basic gear and no gimmick to speak of at all (based on what we’ve seen thus far) but she has generally looked pretty crisp in the ring…whilst Ariel has something inherently very likeable about her which has made most of her matches fun.

Rogers fancies herself as a technician, so it’s probably to her benefit that the match starts at a extremely methodical and mat-based pace. Ariel realises she needs to break that up and actually drives a headbutt into her opponent’s chest. Rogers is the one to dial up the intensity from there though, suplexing and neckbreaker-ing her way into the ascendancy for several minutes until Ariel lands a sliding boot to the face. Neither woman really establishes themselves though…and eventually they both grab each other’s hair and simultaneously drive each other’s faces into the canvas. It’s noticeable that Cindy is getting frustrated – and she grabs Ariel’s tights trying to force a cheap victory. She follows it with an X-Factor, only for Ariel to hit the Dariel for the win at 08:42

Rating - * - Both women worked extremely hard, and I really liked that we were starting to see a little more personality from Cindy…but on the whole this never clicked. There was plenty of minor sloppiness, and at times it felt like a procession of rather poorly executed and not particularly exciting basic spots. I like both women, but they really didn’t work as opponents here.

Rogers is annoyed at her loss and walks out without shaking her opponent’s hand.

Lacey mocks Nikki for wanting to work her way up the SHIMMER card. She accepts Roxx’s open challenge to a match tonight…

The Experience vs Serena Deeb/Portia Perez
By this point in SHIMMER’s existence you should get the point of these matches. The Experience (Lexie Fyfe and Malia Hosaka) are the big, bruising veteran team…and mostly all they do is go around roughing up the young, up and coming members of the SHIMMER roster. Tonight they have future WWE star Serena Deeb and future Canadian Ninja Portia Perez (in her main show debut) in their sights

The temper tantrum Fyfe and Hosaka throw when the ring announcer accidentally adds 100lbs to their combined weight is must-see. They are still pissed off about it as the match starts, meaning they aren’t focused on their opponents…so Deeb is able to toss Malia around the ring. She successfully injures the veteran’s arm it seems and that’s the focus of offence for the youngster in the first couple of minutes. Eventually Hosaka has to smash Perez’s face into Lexie’s boots to break up their dominance. Fyfe starts choking her from behind as well – putting their team at a serious disadvantage. They aren’t averse to breaking a few rules of course and it leaves Portia seemingly on the brink of defeat. Hot tag to Serena, who crumples Fyfe with a gutbuster and stays on that body part with a kick flurry to the stomach. Spinning heel kick from Perez to Hosaka for 2…as Lexie tosses Deeb to the floor. Double gourdbuster earns The Experience another victory at 07:01

Rating - ** - The Experience aren’t particularly flashy or innovative but they have a gimmick, character, obvious motivation and they don’t try sh*t they aren’t capable of executing. Once again this won’t steal the show, but as usual they produced a perfectly competent veterans vs youngsters undercard tag. Perez showed glimpses of the pretty serious talent she’d become too. Not amazing by any means, but this was a big step up in quality from the first two matches.

Cheerleader Melissa accepts Daizee’s challenge…so our Volume 7 main event is set.

Rain vs MsChif
These are two of the bigger names in SHIMMER. MsChif is hot following her Last Woman Standing victory over Cheerleader Melissa so will want to ensure she doesn’t lose momentum tonight. She has a tough opponent though – in the form of the Minnesota Home Wrecking Crew’s Rain. Lacey accepted Nikki Roxx’s challenge tonight, so their plans for tag team dominance of SHIMMER are on hold for this show.

Rain takes an early cheapshot on MsChif…who is so unimpressed she repeatedly pops her in the mouth with elbow strikes. Bodyscissors takedown into a MutaLock from her, doing such damage that Rain leaves the ring and does her best to get away. Apparently MsChif is carrying a minor rib injury, and Rain goes after it with a flurry of kicks then a knee to the guts. Chif is obviously weakened, and as she tries another bodyscissors this time Rain counters to a SEATED LION TAMER! And she throws in extra shots to the exposed ribs too! She back fists her way free of Rain’s clutches…but hits a standing moonsault and immediately grabs her ribs in pain. Rain hits a sliding dropkick to the midsection again to make her plight still worse. DOUBLE STOMP TRAMPOLINE! Abdominal stretch applied, with Rain making sure she gets as low as possible in executing it since MsChif is so notoriously flexible. Somehow MsChif escapes with a backpack stunner…which again hurts her ribs meaning she simply collapses to the ground alongside her opponent. She finally manages to double stomp Rain’s face into the bottom turnbuckle, as Cheerleader Melissa comes to ringside. MsChif and Melissa lock eyes, distracting the green lady for long enough to allow Rain to hit a lungblower. Rain Drop countered to Call From The Grave…as on the outside Lacey comes out and FLOORS Melissa. Lacey distracts the ref and secretly passes a chain to Rain. But Melissa drags Lacey off the apron, allowing referee Bryce Remsburg to see Rain use the chain as a weapon. It’s a DQ victory for MsChif at 08:30

Rating - *** - Low end 3* because I didn’t particularly care for the finish, but most of what came before it was really good. MsChif did a killer job selling the ribs and deserves great credit for doing so considering so much of her offence is based around her flexibility and core strength.

Lacey and Rain look furious with Melissa, who dares them to do something about it.

Natalya Neidhart is pumped to make her SHIMMER debut against Sara Del Rey tonight…

Amber O’Neal vs Allison Danger
This is a big match for the former ‘Team Blondage’ member. Amber fashions herself after the stereotypical ‘diva’ and her SHIMMER career has been more memorable for antics and shenanigans than it has been for her in-ring performances thus far. Tonight she steps into the ring with Allison Danger, the face of the SHIMMER locker room. Will Allison teach her a lesson in respect, or will Amber prove she has the skills to cut it in this promotion?

Daffney joins the announce team and watches on as Amber surprises a few people with her ability to trade holds with Danger. She still isn’t averse to taking shortcuts though, occasionally grabbing a handful of hair or Allison’s gear in order to gain an advantage. Next they go through a flurry of nearfalls as well…where once again O’Neal gives as good as she gets. STRIKE EXCHANGE! Amber SLAPS DANGER IN THE FACE! Allison then does her best to flat-out murder her blonde opponent with elbow smashes. ‘Do I have all my teeth?’ - O’Neal to the referee. Realising she can’t out-strike her opponent, Amber works her leg instead. She bashes it into the side of the ring, causing Danger to repeatedly retreat to the ropes for sanctuary. Next she goes to submissions, with a spinning toehold then a half crab utilised to do further damage to her opponent’s leg. Even when Danger lands an enzi kick, she doesn’t have the strength in her leg to get back to her feet. Finally she rallies with more big strikes…but when she hits the Lovelace Choker she goes down again due to the damage it does to her own leg! FIVE AMIGOS by Allison! Of course that messes up her knee as well so she is painfully slow to cover afterwards. Suddenly both women are rocking injuries – with O’Neal’s back now as messed up as Danger’s leg. Amber isn’t holding back though and from her knees engages Danger in another BRUTAL elbow strike duel. Things get a bit sloppy on the mat, but the end result is Allison cranking on Amber’s bad back with an STF. O’Neal taps at 12:21

Rating - *** - A coming out party for Amber O’Neal here, as she produced a cracking in-ring performance to go alongside her larger-than-life persona. These women didn’t hold anything back in what turned out to be a physical, intense and hard-fought battle. Sure it got a little sloppy towards the end, and the selling was patchy…but on the whole they told a great story, progressively built up the drama as the match proceeded and ended with a logical finish.

Lacey vs Nikki Roxx
As we know, Roxx is one of the less experienced members of the SHIMMER roster, but she has repeatedly stated she wants to climb the card in the company. After a commendable performance against Amazing Kong at Volume 5, and a victory over Lorelei Lee on Volume 6 she now feels ready to start taking on the top stars in SHIMMER. She issued an open challenge, feeling she has what it takes to beat anyone on the entire roster. Lacey accepted the challenge, feeling that Nikki isn’t good enough to cut it at the top end of SHIMMER competition. In fact, Lacey thinks Roxx is so far beneath her that she even said in her promo earlier that she is using this as a ‘tune-up’ to ensure she stays at the top of her game for Minnesota Home Wrecking Crew matches…

It’s been years, but I still mark out for Lacey’s use of ‘The Game’ by Disturbed EVERY time. It’s such a killer entrance theme. And to give Nikki her credit, whilst I’ve yet to be convinced by her SHIMMER work, the crowd absolutely LOVE her. They work the mat early, with Lacey clearly the more aggressive of the two as she look to prove Roxx isn’t in her league. The Home Wrecker’s frustration grows as Nikki continually counters her sh*t though…and eventually leads to her biting Nikki’s hand. Roxx retaliates by blocking her signature hiptoss spot then driving the veteran right out of the ring with a Samoan drop. Nikki is so pumped for this she even has Lacey’s attempt to cheapshot her scouted, as she dodges an attempted elbow drop between the ropes then hauls her to the canvas again with an armdrag. Lacey resorts to grabbing a handful of Nikki’s hair and using it to hit a diving facecrusher for 2. Lacey gets increasingly violent with Roxx – raking her face against the mat then positioning her in the corner for a volley of kicks to the back and neck. Pretty soon she’s opened up a pretty serious back injury which really starts slowing Nikki down. Repeated elbows to the spine next…followed by a spinning heel kick which clocks her right across the side of the face. NECK DROP BACK SUPLEX! Roxx bumps around like a ragdoll and looks all but dead at the ten minute mark. Lacey is unrelenting though, tying her up in the ropes and stretching the back out some more with surfboards and camel clutches in that position. Amazingly, Nikki still has enough in the tank to block the Implant DDT, but she weakly stumbles into a swinging neckbreaker instead. Somehow she muscles Lacey into a northern lights suplex…but collapses to the mat after attempting to bridge it into a pin. ELBOW STRIKE DUEL! Beauty Special nailed by Nikki for 2! Barbie Crusher blocked with KNEES TO THE FACE! LUNGBLOWER GETS 2! COBRA CLUTCH BACKBREAKER! And STILL Nikki refuses to be counted down! BARBIE CRUSHER NAILED! NIKKI WINS! It’s over at 14:59

Rating - **** - It is an absolute travesty that Lacey never went on to crack WWE (or even TNA) and get some serious money and exposure out of the wrestling business…because she is SO good. I know she did some hosting work for Wrestling Society X, but I am gutted for her that she never got further than the indies. I’m on record as saying I find Roxx to be a rather green and inconsistent performer (at this stage of her career), but the Kong match proved she had real fire and tenacity, as well as an ability to be carried by high quality opponents. Lacey was that high quality opponent here, walking her through a star-making match. She’s so slick and easy to hate as a heel, her assault on Nikki’s back was vicious, and the way she SOLD the storyline of the match – over-confident veteran getting more and more frustrated at her inability to put away a ‘weaker talent’ – was simply awesome. Nikki busted her ass too, putting over the beating she received really well. Both women helped each other look really good here, which is what good pro-wrestling should be about. Some may not go as high as me on the rating, but I thought for story-telling, workrate, the quality of Lacey’s personal performance and the way each woman came out with their reputation enhanced regardless of who won and who lost – this deserves every one of those four stars.

LuFisto vs Mercedes Martinez
Both Mercedes and Sara Del Rey have made it known they want a third match in their trilogy. That will happen, but tonight they look to one-up each other as they each step forward to take on high profile newcomers to the SHIMMER roster. Martinez backs herself as a hard-hitter and all-round tough fighter…but she has her work cut out tonight as she opposes one of the toughest, hard-hitting women in professional wrestling.

The initial mat exchange is seriously intense. Prazak and Danger put over LuFisto’s desire to prove herself as a great wrestler as well as a hardcore worker, and she really demonstrates that ability in the opening minutes. The pace quickens as each misses big strike attempts…and then they get in each other’s faces to prove they really mean business. They are so evenly matched it seems, neither able to gain a clear advantage no matter what tactic they try. Mercedes is the first to land a big strike though, knocking her opponent backwards with a running dropkick. Spinning heel kick from the Hardcore Anime, softening Martinez up sufficiently for her to hit a Michinoku Driver for 2. SKULLF*CK! Mercedes is rattled and dishes out a nasty running boot to the stomach to drive the Canadian back. Regal Stretch applied, although Prazak questions whether LuFisto would ever quit considering how much punishment she’s endured in her career. Sure enough she doesn’t tap out there, but it weakens her core and leaves her vulnerable to a flurry of kicks and elbows in the corner from the Latina Sensation. Fisto double stomps the back then camel clutches her…with CROSSFACE STRIKES! Mercedes fights out with a spinebuster for 2. DEAD-LIFT LIGERBOMB! LuFisto survives that and PASTES Martinez in the corner with elbows and a running bootscrape. Diving Star misses though, allowing Double M to hit a German suplex…and they both stay down. LuFisto is up first with a DVD, but can’t put her opponent away. Martinez lands the Bull Run and takes the win at 13:04

Rating - *** - Strong style is a perfectly apt way to describe this one. It wasn’t overly clever or psychological, but holy cow did these two women ever hit hard. They really did beat the hell out of each other for thirteen minutes, and in the end a winner was determined by which one of them could successfully execute their finishing move first.

Nattie Neidhart vs Sara Del Rey
This would be right before Nattie signed a WWE developmental deal, so unfortunately Volumes 7 and 8 are her only SHIMMER appearances. People had been wanting to see her appear in this promotion since it’s inception, and Prazak was suitably pleased when he signed her up to work these shows. She is thrown straight into the deep end with a match against arguably the best wrestler on the SHIMMER roster in Sara Del Rey. Sara knows the pressure is on her to win after her rival, Mercedes Martinez, defeated the other high-profile debutant in the previous match.

Nattie’s impressions of her father are amazingly good. They aren’t as good as the chain wrestling they begin the match with though. Both these women boast some exceptional talent amongst their trainers and influences…and it really shows as they effortlessly go back and forth without letting up for several minutes. Natalya tries to take a cheap shot…which doesn’t remotely impress Del Rey who freaking NAILS her with an elbow strike. As the bigger of the two women she seems keen to work a slow pace and keep the match grounded for as long as possible. However, she’s had plenty of experience in Mexico recently and as the pace quickens she works in several lucha skills to outwit her rival. In the end Neidhart has no choice but to drill a big knee into Sara’s guts just to keep her at bay. Clearly Anvil Jr. doesn’t mind breaking the rules, and after taking several minutes of punishment from the Death Rey she relishes throttling her against the ropes. Having hammered the midsection making it hard for her to breathe, now Nattie targets Del Rey’s knee – of course prepping her for the Sharpshooter. Nattie’s whole approach is awesome. She is vicious and remorseless in launching a two-pronged attack on both the legs and midsection…and continually mauls or chokes Sara anytime she looks remotely capable of mounting a comeback. Soon the American Angel can barely stand…and where once she dominated now she desperately looks for victories via flash pin just to escape with her undefeated record intact. Somehow she plants a dropkick into Neidhart’s neck, but gets greeted with a violent flurry of elbows from the Canadian which leaves her slumped over the apron. Sharpshooter attempted for the first time, but Del Rey blocks with a front choke. She propels herself out of the corner into a (rather telegraphed) sunset flip and builds momentum with a flurry of running boots. Nattie NO SELLS! FACE CHOP! NATTIE BY NATURE! Del Rey is like a pitbull blocking the Sharpshooter so Neidhart gives her a GERMAN SUPLEX for 2! Sara goes for a nifty bridging lucha-inspired roll-up…SHARPSHOOTER ON NATALYA! But she knows a million counters for that hold, and she fights back to her feet into an elbow duel! BUTTERFLY LOCK! ROYAL BUTTERFLY! Sara wins at 18:47

Rating - **** - What a war this was. Both women are seriously talented, and watching them riff off each other for nearly twenty minutes was a genuine privilege. If you were looking to be ultra-critical you could point out that Sara made very little effort to sell the knee or the back…which is a real shame considering how downright awesome Neidhart was in working on them. However, that did pay off down the closing stretch – as it became apparent Nattie hadn’t done enough damage to be able to execute the Sharpshooter, thus leading to her defeat. It’s no surprise that now, in 2015, both women are employed by the WWE. A lot of what they were doing here was light years ahead of some of the other female wrestlers on this show.

Mercedes Martinez interrupts Sara’s celebrations. Her mic skills are severely limited, but the point is that she wants the third match in their trilogy at Volume 8…

Cheerleader Melissa vs Daizee Haze
Initially Daizee was preparing for a 60-minute Iron Woman Match with arch-rival Rebecca Knox, and was severely disappointed when Knox’s injury meant that one was cancelled. However, she still wanted to prove herself amongst the elite in SHIMMER – so laid out the challenge to another top-level competitor in Melissa. The Cheerleader lost the climactic battle in her feud with MsChif at Volume 6, but knows she can restore her reputation pretty quickly with a victory over the Haze tonight.

Melissa’s face as Daizee goofs off with the fans is an absolute picture. She then legit dumps Haze on her damn head with a rugged STO in the first 90 seconds. Haze seem so fragile compared to Melissa, and even the simplest of moves like armwrenches look needlessly violent on her significantly smaller frame. Realising how outmatched she is when on a vertical base, Daizee takes the match to the ground looking to tie her opponent up in an assortment of holds. Credit to her as well, she looks far better using her speed on the mat and ensnaring the Cheerleader in grounded holds than she does botching high spots. Despite her size advantage it takes Melissa several minutes to escape Haze’s clutches – although when she does she really brutalises the smaller competitor with some close range elbows. Daizee goes right back to headlocks, clinging tight to them so Cheerleader has absolutely no room to throw strikes or utilise her power moves. Satellite headscissors nailed too – driving Melissa on her head! She has to leave the ring to recover from that. SUICIDE DIVE TO THE FLOOR BY HAZE! She isn’t letting Melissa get any distance…but chasing her to the floor may not be the best of strategies. The Cheerleader is a hell of a brawler and she scoops her up to start BASHING HER HEAD INTO THE GUARDRAILS! OVER AND OVER AGAIN! That looked sick! And she’s not done with the guardrails either, as she starts bending her hapless opponent around them at some seriously nasty angles. Next she makes Haze EAT ONE OF HER POMPOMS! Daizee looks to snatch a quick win to escape the punishment…but sees her attempt at a crucifix pin countered into a Samoan drop for 2. More punishment to Haze’s little body comes next, with Cheerleader bending her entire torso around the turnbuckles in a modified surfboard. Not only is this vicious attack softening Haze up for Melissa’s finishers, but it’s also destroying Daizee’s core strength therefore negating her ability to hit any of her own finishing moves. MISSILE DROPKICK out of nowhere scores for the underdog but she’s taken so much punishment she struggles to capitalise. Once again she attempts flash pins in an attempt to finish things and escape further punishment…before she counters the Air Raid Crash into a crucifix stretch! Kudoh Driver blocked…Heart Punch blocked…RUNNING AIR RAID CRASH BY MELISSA! Both women look absolutely drained now. Haze is still trying anything just to pin her opponent, but eats an axe kick to the back of the head. KUDOH DRIVER…COUNTERED TO THE HEART PUNCH! MIND TRIP BLOCKED…INTO THE F*CKING KUDOH DRIVER! Melissa wins at 22:01

Rating - **** - Possibly my favourite Daizee Haze performance ever. I’ve seen her have good matches before, but I’ve always felt it was mostly because she was being carried by better workers. Here, she actually carried the bulk of the match on her shoulders…and she really delivered. I loved the opening portion of the match, where she negated Melissa’s striking and strength not by using her sloppy speed spots, but instead by going to a surprisingly crisp ground game. She frustrated Melissa for a full ten minutes like that – prompting the Cheerleader to get REALLY violent in order to get back into things. The guardrail head-bashing spot was stupendously violent and was really the turning point of the match. From that point on Daizee couldn’t escape Cheerleader’s clutches, couldn’t avoid her strikes, and although she fought valiantly to steal a flash victory (and even kicked out of the Air Raid Crash) she ultimately fell to defeat. Much like Roxx/Lacey earlier, here is another example of a match where both women worked extremely hard to put over the skills of their opponent and as a result came out of the match both looking like a million bucks. Haze looks like a solid wrestler and a tough little cookie for surviving the Air Raid Crash and needing Melissa’s ‘special occasion finisher’, the Cop Killa, to put her away. That was actually the first time Melissa has hit the Kudoh Driver in SHIMMER so far. In turn, Melissa looks like a tough, violent bad-ass which is absolutely vital after dropping the match to MsChif on the last Volume.

Lacey and Rain run in to attack Melissa from behind in retribution for thwarting their attempts to cheat against MsChif earlier. Speaking of MsChif…she comes in and takes out the Home Wrecking Crew in an unlikely save for her arch enemy. Lacey challenges them to a tag match at Volume 8…

Tape Rating - **** - I have this down as one of SHIMMER’s strongest Volume’s thus far. There is still a bit of fluff to sift through at the bottom of the card from the usual suspects…but once you get to the real talent this show gets really good. MsChif/Rain, Martinez/LuFisto and Danger/O’Neal are all really solid. Amber O’Neal produced a real breakout performance in her battle with Allison and actively made me interested to see what they do with her moving forward, whilst watching Mercedes and LuFisto beat the snot out of each other was so much fun. This show also packs in three really great bouts deserving of a 4* rating in my view. Lacey helped Nikki Roxx to possibly her best SHIMMER outing so far, and Daizee Haze produced her best performance too in a cracking main event with the ever-reliable Cheerleader Melissa. Del Rey/Neidhart oozed quality too. Overall if you’re looking to check out SHIMMER’s early stuff and can find this one anywhere, it’s a pretty easy recommend.
