SHIMMER Women Athletes – Volume 14 – 1st July 2007

SHIMMER doesn’t venture out of their Berwyn home base too often, so immediately this Volume feels like quite an event. It is their first show outside of the Eagles Club, running Florida in conjunction with an FIP event (I believe). After packing three shows into two days to crowd the first ever SHIMMER Champion at the last tapings, rather refreshingly this is a standalone show…and the card is duly stacked. Sara Del Rey and Lacey meet for the SHIMMER Title in a rematch from the tournament final on Volume 12. Amazing Kong returns to face Nikki Roxx in a rematch from Volume 5. Cindy Rogers and Allison Danger will contest a 2/3 Falls grudge match, plus Cheerleader Melissa against Rain and an intriguing match up between Daizee Haze and MsChif. Dave Prazak and Allison Danger have brought the SHIMMER crew to Inverness, FL for one night only…

Hotness overload from the outset, as Rebecca Bayless is interviewing Lacey. She plans to make Del Rey’s reign as SHIMMER Champion an extremely short one…

SIDENOTE – Getting SHIMMER out of the Eagles Club was an interesting idea, but it is fair to say that this venue lacks the character of the promotion’s home arena. The crowd is light on numbers (including multiple vacant front row seats) and the bigger building isn’t retaining the noise as well either. It does make for a fresh viewing experience at least, with an instant separation from the thirteen previous Volumes. And I’m not sure if it’s just the different camera set-up or not, but FIP’s ring looks much bigger than SHIMMER’s…

Amber O’Neal vs Ariel
These two women are now veterans of SHIMMER competition and together make a sensible choice to open up a show in a new market. Amber is instantly recognisable as a heel with her diva character at jarring odds with the majority of the women on the roster (although she has shown on occasion that she can be a surprisingly tough cookie). On the flip side Ariel is one of the most obvious babyfaces in the company. Everything about her at this point screamed babyface. These two could make for natural opponents…

O’Neal revels in getting reactions out of an intimate crowd like this and has plenty of fun pissing them off by repeatedly pulling Ariel’s hair behind the ref’s back. She then leaves the ring to stall for as long as possible when the Portuguese Princess seeks revenge. X-Factor gets 2 for the Bullet Babe, but it’s a rare wrestling move amidst a sea of chokes, eye rakes and generally nefarious tactics that keep Ariel on the canvas. At least all that choking leads somewhere though, as she uses all the damage they do by looking to force victory with a guillotine choke. Ariel retaliates with a series of elbow strikes then a fisherman suplex, but looks visibly slowed after taking such abuse from Amber throughout the match. STO (which O’Neal has won matches with before) scores another nearfall, before Ariel lands the Dariel and grabs the popular victory at 09:16

Rating - ** - By this point in SHIMMER you’ll have seen these two women wrestle this exact match a number of times. That isn’t to say it was bad, but after fourteen shows and almost two years it is tough to say that either of these ladies have progressed their careers much (if at all). Having said that, and as I pointed out during my introduction, they make natural opponents for each other and this was certainly a perfectly functional opening match. The live audience will more than likely contain a number of people who have never seen a SHIMMER show before, so getting an obvious heel and a relatable babyface out there to get them into proceedings was a solid choice. Amber, in particular, did a great job of getting the small crowd into things.

Cindy Rogers vs Allison Danger – 2/3 Falls Match
This match has been scheduled to finally settle the ever-lengthening feud between Allison Danger and her treacherous former friend. Cindy’s ruthless careerism meant she turned her back on Danger and, albeit often via illicit means, she has been rewarded with a major upturn in fortunes – culminating at Volume 13 when she bested Danger in a Dog Collar Match. Previously we’ve seen her cheat to win matches, we saw her assault Allison after their violent No DQ Match at V12…but no matter what you think of her tactics she has undoubtedly always been in the ascendancy in this feud with one of the bigger names in SHIMMER Women Athletes. In fact, Danger was so desperate to get a measure of retribution and to get her hands on Cindy once more than she let Rogers pick the stipulations for this one. The ‘Definition of Technician’ is living up to her moniker; eschewing traditional grudge match stipulations and opting for something which suits her abilities as a mat wrestler.

The crowd is completely silent and doesn’t seem to know who Rogers is in the slightest, which isn’t ideal for a feud-ending grudge match. However, Cindy makes an immediate impact by grabbing Danger’s tights and rolling her up for an immediate three count – taking the first fall at 0:08! Allison has been cheated by Rogers time after time and really struggles to contain her frustrations now. That anger isn’t productive though and leads to Cindy repeatedly getting the better of her as they trade holds. From almost nothing this match starts getting REALLY interesting. For long stretches they don’t get up from the canvas. Each hold feels like a struggle, and each counter feels like a major event. Rogers is the aggressor and probes the arms, legs and back for weaknesses forcing AD to use all of her experience just to stay alive in the second fall. In the end it necessitates a kamikaze flip out of the corner which lands Danger on HER OWN HEAD to break Cindy’s grip on her arm. Allison tries a dragon sleeper from there…but such is the damage she’s received that Rogers is easily able to slip out into a surfboard. Stump Puller locked in next…only for Danger to escape with the Lovelace Choker. SHIMMERING WARLOCK! With the time at 11:23 Danger takes the fall and makes it 1-1. Cindy has had her bell rung by that so wisely leaves the ring to get some extra recovery time. She eventually jumps her opponent, meaning that once again she can take Allison to the mat and look to control her from there. A Rings Of Saturn is blocked…so Cindy simply clamps into a double underhook toehold! Both women are soaked in sweat, but somehow find the energy as we cross the 15-minute mark to trade nearfalls at high speed then break out the rolling cradle. STO countered to a neckbreaker by Cindy! A sidewalk slam scores moments later and Danger is really selling the adverse effects of the Rogers onslaught. TCB blocked with another Lovelace Choker…which gets 2 almost by virtue of Danger collapsing onto her rival rather than actively trying to pin her. TCB LOCKED IN! DANGER IS CHOKED OUT! Rogers wins the match at 20:52

Rating - **** - I’ve enjoyed the matches these women have contested with each other in their feud, but this was by far the best of them all. The ‘wrestling’ stipulations were far more suited to them than the hardcore environment, and they revelled in having more than twenty minutes to go out and express themselves. Not everything was perfect, but I thought Cindy really stepped up with her performance here. The crowd didn’t seem to have a clue who she was, but she really connected with them as heel almost exclusively through the aggressive effectiveness of her work (plus a massive cheat in the first ten seconds). She took the lead for most of the match and was utterly convincing as the lethal technical assassin looking to pull Allison Danger limb from limb on the mat. Both of my favourite Danger matches in SHIMMER thus far (her two bouts with Rebecca Knox) have been lengthier affairs where she’s been able to use her naturally sympathetic babyface ability to emphasise the strengths of great mat wrestlers – and this one fell into that bracket too. Rogers isn’t in the same league as K-Nox obviously, but this match was on that sort of level. It’s just a shame they didn’t get to do this in front of the Berwyn fans, who would have been much hotter for it.

Malia Hosaka tells Rebecca Bayless about how experienced she is. Which is pretty much the same thing she’s been doing since SHIMMER began…

Lexie Fyfe vs Daffney
This is Daffney’s in-ring debut for SHIMMER. She has managed MsChif fairly successfully thus far, but now steps between the ropes for the first time. A tough test awaits her in the form of one half of The Experience – Lexie Fyfe. Fyfe is pissed off at losing The Experience’s losing streak to MsChif so will welcome the chance to vent some anger on her manager.

Fyfe’s anger at being boo’d even in her home state is fun. Daffney, on the other hand, is the most over woman on the show so far by a mile. She is much more fun as a wrestler than she is as a manager it seems. Her impressions of Lexie as an old T-Rex, then intentionally gassing her in a criss-cross draw plenty of laughs. Lexie mauls Daff when at last she does manage to get her hands on her. Being significantly bigger than her opponent she is able to toss her around with ease. Daffney appears to injure her leg…and Fyfe takes advantage to tap her out with an anklelock at 06:35

Rating - * - I’m not sure if the injury was legitimate or not so I won’t be too critical, but in the end this match wasn’t really substantial enough to lead anywhere. I can’t stand Daffney as the screaming, goofy manager of MsChif – but in the ring her hybrid Colt Cabana/Delirious/MsChif act was pretty entertaining and something I’d welcome seeing more of. She would undoubtedly be far more entertaining on SHIMMER’s undercards than the likes of Josie, Lorelei Lee and Alicia.

Malia Hosaka hits the ring as well, enabling The Experience to unite in giving Daffney a good kicking. MsChif and Hosaka’s opponent tonight, Serena Deeb, finally make a save…leading to our next match.

Malia Hosaka vs Serena Deeb
Serena is a young rising star in SHIMMER (albeit I’m not sure she’s produced an in-ring performance worthy of the hype Dave Prazak gives her quite yet), and Hosaka is the grizzled veteran looking to teach the young pups the business. The plot writes itself for these two…

Serena starts hot, but even the camera man isn’t interested in her act so films Daffney being tended to by medics and referees instead. She goes to work on Hosaka’s arm and achieves moderate success. That is until Malia uses her ‘experience’ to start raking the eyes. Not to criticise Hosaka’s gimmick, but does it really take experience to tell you that poking someone in the eye means they can’t see?? To the credit of both women, Deeb really sells it…and Malia puts some stank on that approach by kicking her right in the face! It is tough not to enjoy the cranky veteran tactics of Hosaka though. She follows the eye raking with a random prolonged attack on the throat then a STOMACH CLAW! Perhaps admitting he gave these two a little too much ring time, Prazak is ignoring the match too now in favour of running through current SHIMMER news – such as the pending debut of UK wrestler Jetta. Deeb picks up the win with a spear at 11:31

Rating - * - At times Hosaka being villainous was fun to watch, but these two really didn’t need more than eleven minutes in the ring together for this. It really dragged, and I’m still waiting to see what was so special about Serena Deeb that justifies the amount of hype she gets on SHIMMER shows and eventually wound up getting her a WWE contract.

Nikki Roxx credits losing to Amazing Kong back at Volume 5 with giving her the drive and determination to work her way up to SHIMMER main event status. Tonight she has a rematch with Kong…and plans to win.

Rain vs Cheerleader Melissa
Previously we’ve seen friction between the Minnesota Home Wrecking Crew and the Melissa/MsChif team. At V8 the Home Wreckers were able to defeat Melis-Chif in tag team competition, but in singles action Melissa is a fearsome competitor. She’s had some high profile setbacks, such as losing the climactic battle in her feud with MsChif and disappointingly being eliminated from the first round of the SHIMMER Title Tournament by Sarah Stock – but Rain will know she’ll need every trick she has concealed in her hypothetical sleeves to survive this…

Prazak and Danger poke fun at Cheerleader Melissa trying to act like a babyface whilst looking like she wants to murder Rain. The Home Wrecker is incredibly wise and tries to spend as much time as possible hiding from the Cheerleader on the floor. Even when they start wrestling – Rain looks like she’s using every fibre of her being to execute the most simple of holds…whereas Melissa is able to nonchalantly counter most things with a cynical smirk on her face. Kondo Clutch WITH A FOOT IN RAIN’S FACE! Somehow Rain survives that and drops her opponent into a lungblower. She works Melissa’s back and ribs and inflicts sufficient damage that the bigger woman has had her power advantage noticeably reduced. Note that I said ‘reduced’ not ‘eradicated’ though…as pretty soon Cheerleader whacks her with a lariat then puts her in a FACE STOMPING HALF CRAB! CURB STOMP! Rain is so terrified she grabs the bottom rope and refuses to let go! MELISSA SLAPS HER IN THE FACE! Her back injury prevents her from hitting the Air Raid Crash, and Rain counters into a TORNADO LUNGBLOWER! Rain Drop blocked! Air Raid Crash blocked! Crucifix pin, countered into the RUNNING AIR RAID CRASH! Melissa wins at 14:18

Rating - *** - I know I’ve said it countless times across my SHIMMER review series thus far, but I absolutely adore Melissa’s work. She isn’t necessarily the most charismatic performer – but her actual character is PERFECT. She dresses like a cheerleader, she is supposedly a babyface…but everything about her is built towards just kicking the sh*t out of her opponents. From her completely awkward and insincere poses with pompoms during her entrance, to her uncomfortable crowd interactions. The only time she looks truly at ease inside the ring is when she is brutalising somebody. It’s great to watch and means that, even if she isn’t necessarily wrestling in top gear like tonight, her matches almost always entertain me. Rain isn’t the best worker on the roster either – but continually finds ways to have fresh, engaging undercard matches without becoming stale and repetitive (i.e. The Experience). She was such an ass through the course of this match which really emphasised the pay off at the end: Melissa beating her senseless.

MsChif vs Daizee Haze
We now exist in a SHIMMER universe with a top championship at its core. That means that matches like this, between two of the top names on the roster, become instant eliminators for title opportunities. Sara Del Rey currently has the belt, and both women contesting this match will know that a victory here immediately puts them on the cusp of challenging her for it.

MsChif is so intimidating that Bryce Remsburg is too frightened to check her gear for concealed weapons. Despite this being a first-time match for SHIMMER, apparently these two have plenty of history with each other and that familiarity is apparent as they begin with a cagey and cautious exchange of holds through the first five minutes. Working the mat suits both women too – since it means MsChif can’t use her power advantage on Haze, and Daizee can’t take flight or build up any momentum from a vertical base. The Haze is the one who strikes first, hitting a snapmare when her Mind Trip is blocked then dropkicking the neck for 2. She’s not pulling any punches either, and steals Chif’s trampoline dropkicks in the corner spot. MsChif doesn’t like that one bit and responds with the Panic Attack for 2. Despite being perilously off balance Haze connects with a beautiful frankensteiner. Heart Punch blocked…and MsChif gets some payback for earlier by landing the DAIZEE CUTTER on Daizee! HEART PUNCH ON THE HAZE! Yakuza Kick dodged though, allowing Haze to hit a German suplex…which leaves both women on the deck. CODE GREEN ON MSCHIF gets 2! A rather chaotic tilta-whirl into a schoolgirl pin gives Daizee an anticlimactic victory at 17:46

Rating - *** - They went almost twenty minutes in there, so it’s testament to how good it was that this match felt like it flew by. I thought the dynamic of two women knowing each other extremely well matching each other move-for-move without an extended period of dominance either way worked – particularly when it meant they were forced to start stealing each other’s moves in an attempt to get an edge. My issue with this was that, at times, it felt like an exhibition of all the cool sh*t they can do together rather than working a match. I’m not sure they needed almost ten minutes to work meandering and sometimes sloppy counters on the mat for instance. It’s not bad by means, and the last five minutes are really outstanding. Despite it being a good match, it is hard not to look at this as a slight disappointment though. On paper if you were told that these two extremely reliable SHIMMER veterans were getting 17+ minutes in the ring together you’d expect more from them. Perhaps they were holding back to save some heat for the main events.

Amazing Kong vs Nikki Roxx
Their first match back at Volume 5 was a pretty significant one in the careers of both women. For Kong it was her SHIMMER debut. At the time it was a relatively rare US wrestling appearance for her, and she brought a fearsome reputation to the ring with her following her storied career in Japan. She more than lived up to her billing – and delivered a spectacular beating to her talented but inexperienced opponent that evening. The real story of that match, however, was Roxx. She’d showed plenty of heart in her SHIMMER career up to that point – but it was the immense courage she showed in standing up to Kong despite an insanely brutal beating that earned the respect of her peers and the fans. It also convinced her that she had what it took to be a top player in this promotion. From there she rose quickly up the card and made it to the main event of Volumes 10 and 11. Tonight, in another marquee match for her young career, she wants to showcase how far she’s developed. Last time the story was the fact that she survived Kong. This time around she wants the story to be her becoming the woman who inflicts Kong’s first SHIMMER defeat.

Roxx looks to get the jump on her opponent this time – and quickly puts Kong on the ground with a dropkick. Kong just laughs at her though, and soon flattens her with a Warrior Splash for 2. So dominant is Amazing K that Dave Prazak is forced to speculate whether she’d have won the whole tournament and been crowned SHIMMER Champion if she’d been available that weekend. Once again Nikki is taking a hell of a beating, but refusing to quit and actually trying to fight back by mounting her large opponent with a sleeper hold. Amusingly, Kong tries to attack the ref when he attempts to check her arm…so Roxx obviously isn’t that close to victory. The fight spills to the floor…and Kong BRAINS Nikki against a steel chair! They spill into the crowd sending chairs and fans in all direction. IRISH WHIP THROUGH A WHOLE ROW OF CHAIRS by Kong! Nikki just refuses to quit, so eats the Amaze Impact for another nearfall. Amazing Press COUNTERED WITH A SLAP TO THE FACE! DROPKICK ON THE FLOOR BY ROXX! She then ducks a lariat causing AK to club the ringpost. Since that’s also the Back Fist arm she is all over it, wrenching around the post again looking to negate that signature move. Meteora gets 2 for Nikki! Rope run…into a HORRIBLE flying headscissors! But you can cover that by saying Roxx has been beaten senseless! POLISH HAMMER! STUNNER! KONG IS STILL STANDING! BODY SLAM TAKES HER DOWN! But that takes everything poor Nikki has left so she slumps down alongside her massive opponent. BACK FIST FLURRY BY KONG! AMAZING PRESS! Kong wins again at 14:43

Rating - **** - The first match carried more historical significance so I’m guessing people remember that better than this one, but for actual match quality this really trumped V5. Their first match was a squash. An extremely violent one, but a squash nonetheless. What made this one better was how they combined all the elements that made that one fun (Kong’s brutality and Nikki’s ability to take a beating) but actually told a real story with it too. Kong just wanted to recreate what she did last time and beat the piss out of her opponent…but Nikki is a vastly improved performer since then. She still has the same resilience, but now has the ability to take the fight back to Kong. Which made the finish SO perfect. She threw everything she had at Kong, having survived being beaten all over the building. But in toughing out the onslaught she just didn’t have enough left in the tank to finish the job so eventually succumbed to another defeat. Kong isn’t, and has never been, as regular in SHIMMER as Dave Prazak would like…but she is a truly outstanding worker. Each of her matches has in the SHIMMER series has felt extremely special. Everyone raves about Kong/MsChif (and I raved about Kong/Daizee too). This one is right up there with those two in my opinion.

Sara Del Rey vs Lacey – SHIMMER Title Match
The fine work of these two women has helped build SHIMMER from the ground up. Lacey is the top villain in the promotion, combining an unmatched ability to piss the fans off with a deceptively great level of in-ring skill. Del Rey is her opposite – a much loved hard worker who has delivered outstanding matches from Volume 1 when she put the promotion on the map thanks to her showstealer with Mercedes Martinez. They are two of the premier Women Of Honor too. It was fitting that they reached the final of the SHIMMER Title Tournament together and on that night, despite an attempted run-in by Lacey’s tag partner Rain, it was the American Angel who took home the belt. The fans demanded a rematch, so tonight we get it to headline SHIMMER’s first trip outside of the Eagles Club. Will Lacey live up to her word and make Death Rey’s title reign a short one?

Lacey is extremely talkative as usual, and her big mouth seems to get her in a lot of trouble as Del Rey schools her on the mat from the outset. The theme of the opening five minutes is definitely Sara dominating the challenger with her wrestling skill, whilst Lacey desperately tries to hang with her but frequently has to resort to shortcuts like eye rakes, hair pulls and biting. She eventually opts to take a lengthy time-out and spends it arguing with literally as many people as possible (the ref, her opponent, the fans etc). Del Rey tries to up the stakes and pull out a trick she used in the tournament final – the repeated running boots. This time, however, Lacey has it scouted and dodges; dragging Sara down into a half crab instead. That was a great snapshot as to how dangerous Lacey can be, so the champion wisely brings her straight back to the canvas where she had previously shown some dominance. LACEY SLAPS HER RIGHT IN THE FACE! CHEST STOMP BY SARA! Sh*t just got real! Lacey was frustrated after getting schooled for more than ten minutes…and in turn Death Rey stepped up her intensity to match her. The champion really starts to stretch out the midsection: first with a Gory Special, then a rugged camel clutch. She wants to suplex Lacey over the top rope to the floor, but instead gets KICKED THROUGH THE GUARDRAILS! At the fifteen minute mark the challenger seizes the opportunity presented to her. Having exploited the unforgiving environment outside the ring to get an advantage over the superior wrestler across the ring from her she is keen to press home the advantage. Happy to break rules, she continues to scatter eye gouges and chokes amidst some really crisp striking and savage attacks on the back that was injured on the guardrail earlier. We get a clear indication of how successful she is, and how unsettled Sara has become, when the champ tries a completely out of character running crossbody. She gets nowhere near Lacey and does more damage to her back and ribs as a result. Lacey is right in position to capitalise too – hitting a cobra clutch backbreaker for 2. STRAIGHT KNEE TO THE CHEST! That looked brutal and Del Rey instantly clutches the ropes gasping for air. From nowhere Del Rey lands a missile dropkick…which of course hurts her as much as her opponent meaning they both stay down afterwards. RUNNING BOOT FLURRY! The crowd are suddenly REALLY into this too which helps! Royal Butterfly COUNTERED with elbows! LUNGBLOWER on Del Rey for 2! Implant DDT blocked, and Del Rey tries to pull put the big guns. MOONSAULT MISSES! More damage to her injured midsection! STRAIGHT JACKET GERMAN on Lacey as she tries to set up the Implant DDT again. Still the challenger battles the Royal Butterfly, converting it into a hanging swinging neckbreaker off the top for 2. SLAPS BY SARA! ROYAL BUTTERFLY! LACEY GETS HER FOOT ON THE ROPE! ROYAL BUTTERFLY AGAIN! WITH BACK SELLING! LACEY TAPS! 29:12 is your time.

Rating - ****1/2 - This may well be my favourite SHIMMER match thus far (which is really saying something given some of the quality matches the first fourteen shows have produced). In the stifling Floridian summer heat these two women battled for almost half an hour and produced an absolute classic. They told a great story, divided into three clear and very well defined acts. The first chapter saw Del Rey dominate. She knew she was the better wrestler, and she exploited it for more than ten minutes – making Lacey look extremely foolish at times, and forcing the challenger to rely on rule breaking just to stay alive in the match. Act II saw Lacey opportunistically fight back. After kicking Del Rey through the guardrails (and with a willingness to break the rules when needed) she was brutal in her attack on the champions back. Sara may well have been bigger, stronger and a better wrestler than her…but Lacey has a cunning mind and she used every bit of her ring intelligence to push the champion to the brink of defeat. The final act saw two drained warriors empty the tanks looking to hit their finishers and force victory. In the end Lacey couldn’t hit the Implant DDT to do irreparable damage to Sara’s injured back – and the champ's raw power and fighting spirit meant she had just enough to pull out the win. I’ve not heard or read much praise for this match around, so it seems that not many liked this match as much as me, but I really did think it was outstanding. It was bold and ambitious, it emphasised the strengths of both athletes extremely well, it played off their last match in the SHIMMER Title tournament, and it gave us the clean finish we were deprived of on that occasion. Lacey only has four appearances left after this show, so in many ways this was the conclusion to her character arc of being the primary antagonist throughout SHIMMER’s early Volumes. Fantastic stuff from two outstanding professionals. If Lacey were wrestling as well as this on a full-time basis now I have no doubt she’d quickly be picked up by the WWE.

Sara heads to the locker room and proclaims that the SHIMMER Championship represents a ‘new standard’ in women’s wrestling – making her the best in the world right now. Meanwhile Lacey gets a standing ovation for her performance as she limps back to the locker room.

Tape Rating - **** - I’d rank this up there with the better SHIMMER shows thus far. Sure the two Experience singles matches were poor and the opener was fairly bland, but that’s what you come to expect from a SHIMMER event. What mattered here is that we had a card full of high quality matches between the ‘main event’ talent in the promotion – and they all delivered. Danger/Rogers was a wrestling clinic, and it was wonderful to see those two talented women finally get to produce the match they’ve been capable of but not quite managed to thus far in their feud. MsChif/Haze and Melissa/Rain beefed up the midcard with two strong bouts – both of which could perhaps have been even better making one suspect that they were holding a little back for the two main events. Thankfully both of those really delivered too. Kong/Roxx was an excellent follow-up to their Volume 5 clash. Nikki showed real growth as a performer and I loved how their match demonstrated a natural progression from their first encounter. It also helps that Kong is legitimately terrifying and so completely believable as an unstoppable bad ass running through the SHIMMER roster. Then the main event brought what I believe to be the best SHIMMER match to date. The best wrestler in the company fought the top villain for almost half an hour in a rollercoaster of a contest. Together they helped to build SHIMMER from the ground up with their reliable, consistent, top quality performances show after show and they produced a stunning battle which took everything good they did during the SHIMMER Title Tournament Final and comfortably topped it. Highly recommended if you can find this anywhere.
