SHIMMER Women Athletes – Volume 10 – 7th April 2007

I was rather harsh with my assessment of the Volume 9 DVD. It wasn’t because I didn’t enjoy the show, but simply to reflect the fact that this is now the fifth set of SHIMMER tapings and by this point I would expect them to have started to address the very obvious issue of the chasm in quality between their upper and lower cards. As good as Kong/MsChif and Del Rey/Melissa were, in many ways V9 had one of the weakest undercards yet – a step in the wrong direction. Looking at the card for the second half of these tapings here at Volume 10, it does look like a stronger top-to-bottom line-up. Of course the main events are all appetising, with Lacey battling Cheerleader Melissa, Nikki Roxx getting her wish to main event a SHIMMER show as she faces Sara Del Rey and a colossal mis-match as Daizee Haze steps up to the undefeated Amazing Kong. But beneath those three headliners we do have more to look forward to. Allison Danger and Cindy Rogers collide in something of a grudge match, Amber O’Neal challenges MsChif and the impressive Tiana Ringer squares off with feisty Brit Eden Black. I’m not expecting a perfect top-to-bottom card at this stage in SHIMMER’s existence (although to be fair, they’ve already produced a few outstanding shows), but I would like to see action taken to prevent the first 90 minutes of their DVD’s becoming entirely skippable. Dave Prazak and Allison Danger welcome us back to The Eagles Club in Berwyn, IL.

Portia Perez vs Ariel
If nothing else this one represents a battle between two of the most enjoyable entrance themes in SHIMMER (‘Edge Of Seventeen’ and ‘C’est La Vie’). These two make quite natural opponents anyway, as both characters are rather young, fun loving and free-spirited. Perez is a full blown heel after cheating to defeat Josie at Volume 9 but is still quite a vibrant and bouncy presence in the ring. Her opponent actually showed quite a mean streak at V9 as she really roughed up debutant Alexa Thatcher in their match – albeit whilst still maintaining her usual sunny disposition.

Portia is really watchable, and starts in a rather cocky manner by slapping the Portuguese Princess in the face. She starts choking and raking the eyes next, continuing the ‘attitude change’ angle which she started at the last show. She misses an elbow off the second rope (largely because she spent too long posturing to the fans) and gets punished with a northern lights suplex for 2. Falling front slap gets another nearfall for Ariel as she starts using her size advantage to her benefit. Perez tries to pin her using the ropes but is SO blatant about it that the ref doesn’t even bother counting…and just when you think all Perez has is cheating she busts out a sweet spinning heel kick. Ariel nails the Dariel out of nothing and scores a quick victory at 05:28

Rating - * - I don’t quite get the booking here. Thus far Prazak has booked SHIMMER pretty logically, but this decision I don’t get. Over the last two shows Perez has started gaining some traction as a heel, has showed some ability as a wrestler and could really have used the rub of going 2-0 over these tapings. Ariel, on the other hand, already got a win over Alexa Thatcher, and is pretty much always over as a fun undercard babyface regardless of wins and losses. She didn’t need a victory as much as Portia did in my opinion. The match was just ok too. Perez is definitely entertaining but needs to add a little more to her act than generic heel tricks. Too many women in this promotion define themselves as a heel simply by using eye rakes and hair pulls.

Malia Hosaka vs Josie vs Rain vs Alexa Thatcher
This is something SHIMMER could probably do more of to freshen up the undercard. A lot of these women may not have the experience or the necessary skills to carry a singles match, but have enough spots and bumps in their locker to produce fun multi-person matches. Rain and Hosaka are the most over of these four contenders, and have produced some decent matches over SHIMMER’s nine previous shows. Both are noticeably a step below the top performers though and could use the momentum boost of a big win. Josie must be close to being cut as she really hasn’t done anything too relevant thus far, and Alexa’s SHIMMER career is just starting out as she is making her debut at these tapings. She is a super green compared to the other three.

Nobody wants to start, so everyone pulls seniority and basically forces Alexa to start. She takes Rain by surprise with a couple of crisp pinning combinations, forcing the Minnesota Home Wrecker to leave the ring to bring on Malia. Thatcher rather naively tries to trade holds with the super-experienced Hosaka and winds up getting her leg worked over. Hosaka references a number of her previous matches by taking a few cheap shots at Josie as she watches from the apron. Rain blind tags her way back in to take advantage of Thatcher’s injury…but in doing so pisses off the cantankerous Hosaka, and as they get into a fight Alexa manages to tag Josie in. Hosaka and Rain continue to bicker even as they team up on Josie, and again that allows a vulnerable babyface to escape their clutches. Alexa is limping badly now and totally ill-equipped to deal with the assortment of veteran tricks and unrelenting aggression from Hosaka. Even Josie wants to get in on the act of roughing up poor Thatcher now (even with Malia continuing to take cheap shots at her from the apron). Hosaka breaks her pinfall when she looks set to win with a diving blockbuster and as they brawl on the floor Rain seizes her opportunity – and pins Alexa with the Rain Drop at 08:55

Rating - ** - This one never got particularly exciting, but was held together by an engaging heel performance from Malia Hosaka. She carried the match on her shoulder with her bullying of Alexa, her bitter pursuit of Josie (those two have faced on multiple previous Volumes) and her general grumpiness from start to finish. Alexa again showed some promise as an underdog too so this one was far from a waste of time. Josie and Rain didn’t contribute much of anything however.

Josie and Malia continue to brawl after the match, so presumably this won’t be the last we see of Josie in a SHIMMER ring…

Cindy Rogers vs Allison Danger
At the tapings for Volumes 7 and 8 we saw Rogers start using questionable tactics in her matches. Her friend, and locker room leader, Allison Danger tried to intervene. She realised that Cindy was simply trying to climb the SHIMMER ranks, but believed she was going about things the wrong way. Having encouraged Rogers to ‘do it the right away’, she formed a tag team with her in the hope of steering her onto the correct path. That spectacularly backfired when, during a match with The Experience at V9, Rogers turned on her – laying her out with an X-Factor and leaving Danger to face Fyfe and Hosaka by herself. Danger has wasted no time in demanding this grudge match.

Danger can’t wait to get her hands on Cindy and has to be repeatedly restrained during the introductions. They have an extremely bad tempered opening exchange, with Rogers not backing up one bit in the face of some serious aggression from her rival. She survives the early onslaught and looks to use her technical wrestling ability to quell Allison’s rage – tying her up in an assortment of leg submissions even as Danger throws some vicious strikes back at her. In fact, the entirety of the first five minutes has a real MMA feel to it as both women trade counters, holds and strikes on the canvas in front of a referee visibly struggling to maintain control. Cindy takes the fight to the floor and brains Danger against the ringpost. Russian legsweep INTO THE GUARDRAILS! Allison responds by whipping her into the steel steps! The brawl continues on the floor and both women take some seriously hard hits out there. Rogers is the first to bring proceedings back inside the ring where her mat wrestling ability helps her out – trapping Allison into a Trailer Hitch for an extended period. Danger fights back with the Lovelace Choker but is starting to feel the heat having taken multiple shots to the head and core. Cindy decides to work almost every body part simultaneously by applying a front choke with both legs and arms cradled too! Danger does well to survive that, but as she tries to mount a comeback Cindy forces her down and, using the ropes for leverage, grabs a cheap win at 12:01

Rating - *** - This felt like the first half of a great match with a rushed, cheap finish tacked onto the end. I understand that this was the opening salvo in a longer feud so I’m relatively okay with it, although it is a shame we didn’t see these women get a few minutes longer to really pad out the drama before going to the obligatory cheap finish to get Cindy over whilst giving Allison reason to continue the feud. The first five minutes of this were SO good – both women showing the kind of tenacity, urgency and aggression that we don’t quite see enough of on SHIMMER shows. This wasn’t an exhibition match, it was two skilled rivals who were out there to beat the sh*t out of each other. In Volumes to come these two would go on to contest a couple of highly rated grudge matches. The purpose of this one was to wet your appetite and set your stage for those…and it absolutely delivered. I can’t wait to see where they go next with this rivalry.

Lexie Fyfe vs Serena Deeb
After dropping a hard-fought match to Lacey at V9, this becomes a real pressure situation for Deeb. She has been hyped as one of the more promising rising stars on the roster, but hasn’t beaten an opponent of any real substance yet. She will know she needs to beat an experienced, tough but ultimately pretty limited singles performer like Lexie if she is to back up her promise and start moving up the card.

Fyfe sprints right at Serena and clubs her with a lariat before the bell even rings. Perhaps noticing that Deeb looks a little worse for wear for her second match of the day, she is all over her from the outset. Repeated backbreakers score to leave her in a heap on the canvas, and there is no let up as Lexie drags her up again for rolling vertical suplexes moments later. Pendulum stretch applied then transitioned into a surfboard – leaving Serena on the cusp of defeat. With every move she makes she clutches her aching midsection…yet for some reason thinks a crossbody off the second rope is a suitable move to execute. This is the second match running where Serena has basically ignored the injury her opponent has worked on all match because she is too lazy to sell properly. Attitude Adjuster countered to a roll-up by Deeb, and she is able to hold Lexie down for the three-count. She wins at 07:37

Rating - * - The core premise of the match was solid. They didn’t get too long, didn’t waste time, and it made perfect sense that the bigger, stronger and more experienced Lexie Fyfe would want to crush and dominate this rising star. The Experience’s entire gimmick is based around wanting to dominate the lesser experienced athletes, so this was essentially a continuation of that in singles form. I probably would have even gone to 2* on this, since the content of the match made sure Lexie didn’t lose face, whilst giving Serena the win ensures we are reminded that she is still a rising star even though she has spent much of Volumes 9 & 10 getting her ass kicked. That was until Deeb decided to hit a flying crossbody – after spending the entire match having her midsection worked on. She did a similar thing at V9 against Lacey, and I was totally enraged by it. She didn’t learn from her mistake, and to have two matches in the same day ruined by such a basic error is extremely frustrating. I’m yet to see what all the hype is around Serena…

BREAKING NEWS – Dave Prazak announces that we will see a 16-woman tournament across Volumes 11 & 12 to crown the first ever SHIMMER Champion. In the spirit of bringing in international talent (Ireland’s Rebecca Knox, Canada’s Nattie Neidhart and LuFisto, or Britain’s Nikita for instance), there will be an ‘international mystery wildcard’ entrant…

Amber O’Neal vs MsChif
Amber continues to be tested against some of the truly elite workers in SHIMMER. Having put up a decent fight against the likes of Allison Danger and Daizee Haze previously she now tests her skills against the formidable MsChif – who boasts one of the most impressive won/lost record in the company. MsChif also has a new manager in her corner tonight – in the form of Daffney Unger, who announced her intention to become a manager at V9.

Poor Amber is almost reduced to tears as MsChif and Daffney take turns to scream in her face, then mess her meticulously-maintained hair up too! Even when she tries to get the jump on MsChif it only takes another shrill scream to send her packing back into the corner. O’Neal refuses to quit though and once again showcases her surprising degree of skill as she counters Chif on the mat into a modified camel clutch. Amber is another one of the ‘heels’ in SHIMMER who get heat with nothing more than hair pulling and eye rakes…but it is actually quite easy to sympathise with her given how formidable the MsChif/Daffney duo she is faced with is. Gateway To Annihilation gets 2 for Ms who has always looked like she has a little too much in the tank for O’Neal. Desecrator wins it for MsChif at 06:38

Rating - ** - There was nothing necessarily that wrong here, and in less that seven minutes they never really had the chance to produce anything special. Amber looks out of her depth when wrestling the top women in SHIMMER and it is increasingly looking like her strong match against Allison Danger of a few shows ago was something of a fluke. Having said that, her only role here was to kill time and get over the new MsChif/Daffney alliance and she made a competent fist of that job.

Tiana Ringer vs Eden Black
I’ve enjoyed what I’ve seen from Tiana over the previous two shows. Without winning either match, her individual performances against both Daizee Haze and Nikki Roxx have been particularly good. She isn't getting the hype of a Serena Deeb or a Roxx, she looks a real solid hand and definitely could have been someone that SHIMMER built up for the future. Unfortunately fate intervened and due to personal circumstances this actually wound up being Tiana’s final SHIMMER match (to date). Her opponent is fiery English competitor Eden Black, who made her debut at V9 with a credible victory over Rain. She dresses like a white, British, female version of B-Boy and actually wrestles in his rather sloppy but violent style too. I’m not sure how good she is, but she certainly stands out as something different on the roster.

It’s extremely hard not to like how downright enthusiastic Eden is. Ringer endears herself to me as well by removing all her blue ring attire in annoyance at being called a smurf. Black doesn’t seem like she cares how clean or smooth her work is at all – she is nothing but frenetic, non-stop energy. She spends almost two minutes throwing around all manner of pinning combinations; some looking great and some completely abysmal. Since Tiana is a heel in SHIMMER, she gets an advantage by choking and pulling hair. It’s a tactic we’ve seen before but it is undeniably logical as Ringer works hard to slow down the frantic pace of the Jezebel. Her entire strategy is to grind proceedings to a total halt by any means necessary. She is happy to work the mat and/or showcase her submission skills when needed but is equally content to rake Black in the eyes when she threatens a comeback. The Canadian eventually makes an error though – and lets her ego get the better of her as she tries to engage Eden in a striking contest. They take turns punting each other in the spine, with Black being the harder-hitter of the two by quite a bit. Those kicks almost give Black victory as she briefly locks in the Garden Of Eden. Tiana escapes and hits the South Palm Beach Driver for the win at 09:51

Rating - *** - As always, I’m a sucker for a good story and this match had a sound tale to tell if nothing else. I’m convinced that, had Ringer stuck around, she could have become a serious player in SHIMMER as a lot of her work has been extremely good. Her approach to this match wasn’t particularly fresh (seriously, SHIMMER girls need to start doing more than pulling hair to get heat) but it was such a perfect contrast for the manic, spot-heavy, 100mph style of her opponent. I’m not convinced even Eden knows entirely what she is going to do next but she does make rather compulsive viewing and you can’t help but marvel at her stamina to work at that pace across two matches in one day. Having Tiana control proceedings reigned in some of Black’s sloppier tendencies and they put on a fundamentally sound and crisp little contest. It’s a real shame we didn’t get any more of her

Highlights of Nikki Roxx’s SHIMMER career are shown, from her remarkable and gutsy effort against Amazing Kong through to her recent winning streak (including victories over Lacey and Tiana Ringer). She came into the company wanting to make her mark as a main eventer – and gets her wish tonight as she headlines a card for the first time.

Lacey vs Cheerleader Melissa
It hasn’t gotten a lot of hype, but this match pits my two favourite SHIMMER performers against each other so I am really excited for this one. Melissa is more of a babyface now – particularly after her run-ins with the Minnesota Home Wrecking Crew at Volumes 7 & 8. Having been attacked, then defeated by Lacey (and Rain) at those tapings, then succumbed to defeat in a high profile main event against Sara Del Rey at V9, Melissa will be in an extremely bad mood here tonight...

Lacey’s argument with a couple of little kids before the match is one of the highlights of this entire taping. She is wary of Melissa’s skills and tries to avoid her for as long as possible…but eventually gets grabbed and dropped with a back suplex. Her only defence against the Cheerleader is simply to run away – stalling on the floor and refusing to get anywhere near her dangerous foe. She pounces when Melissa attempts to retrieve her, and smashes her back into the side of the ring. Quickly we see the effectiveness of that as Cheerleader fails to hit her usual Samoan drop and is countered into a lungblower. That back is very much the target of her offence now, be it through stretches or via a basic flurry of savage stomps to the midsection. Melissa digs deep to counter the Implant DDT with the Samoan drop but is noticeably slow to capitalise as she battles her injury. She has no ability to lock in the Kondo Clutch…CURB STOMP INSTEAD! Kondo Clutch secured second time of asking, but with her back weakened Lacey has an easier job making the ropes. She knees her way out of the Air Raid Crash. Implant DDT COUNTERED TO THE RUNNING AIR RAID CRASH! Melissa wins at 10:42

Rating - *** - As far as the quality of the work is concerned this was the best match on the show so far. However, I can’t help but feel exceptionally disappointed that we couldn’t find more than ten minutes for these two super-talented women. Maybe one of them was carrying an injury, maybe the tapings were over-running, or maybe one of them was simply tired after working two shows in the same day – but it was a real shame to see what could have been an all-time great SHIMMER contest relegated to a very decent but ultimately inconsequential ten minute sprint. As usual Lacey stood head and shoulders above her peers as a villain and her brash, bold, pantomime antics worked really well against the more understated, no-thrills ass-kicking style of Melissa.

The hype for the main event continues as Rebecca Bayless interviews Nikki Roxx. She basically reiterates what she said live inside the arena at Volume 9, with the addition that she wants to become on the second person to defeat Sara in SHIMMER…then win the SHIMMER Title at the next taping.

Amazing Kong vs Daizee Haze
If Kong’s battles with Nikki and MsChif were mis-matches, then who knows how you could classify this one. Haze is one of the smallest, lightest competitors on the roster and somehow has to bridge a colossal size gap to take on the world-travelled, ultra-intimidating Amazing Kong. Throughout her SHIMMER career thus far Haze has made a name for herself by upsetting the odds and finding ways to outwit and overcome opponents bigger than herself…but does she have anything in her arsenal capable of stopping AK here?

‘Please don’t die’ – fans to Daizee. Kong’s ‘I’m going to rip your intestines out and laugh about it’ face is awesome too, and this match genuinely has one of the most unique and intense atmospheres of any SHIMMER contest thus far. Haze has NOTHING to threaten to Kong other than trying to keep as far away as she can. Everything she tries is swatted away by the behemoth…who then military presses her so ferociously she almost snaps in half as she hits the ground. Somehow The Haze counters the Amazing Bomb into a hurricanrana only to get squashed with a body avalanche instead. WARRIOR SPLASH NAILED! Poor Daizee is a bedraggled mess as she is hung in the ropes and punished with numerous chops, and has nothing to offer by way of a fight back except to duck sideways and tip her massive opponent out of the ring. TOP ROPE SUICIDE DIVE BY DAIZEE…BUT KONG CATCHES HER AND THROWS HER INTO THE CROWD! THEN KICKS THE RAILING INTO HER FACE! INTO THE CROWD AGAIN! Credit to Haze, she is getting the sh*t kicked out of her! Kong sets up the Amazing Press and looks utterly shocked as the plucky underdog climbs the ropes after her into a SUPER RANA! MISSILE DROPKICK! KONG NO SELLS! LARIATOOOOO! HAZE KICKS OUT! Daizee is on the run again, evading a leg drop and nailing the HEART PUNCH! Yakuza Kick! Kong to one knee! YAKUZA KICK AGAIN! KONG GOES DOWN! TWO COUNT! Heart Punch COUNTERED TO THE BACK FIST OF TOTAL MURDER! AMAZING BOMB! DAIZEE F*CKING KICKS OUT! AMAZING PRESS! It’s over at 11:04

Rating - **** - I actually preferred this to Kong/MsChif. Prazak has struggled to nail Amazing Kong down as a permanent member of the SHIMMER roster, but she came to the party at these tapings and delivered two matches of the very highest order. Across the ten SHIMMER DVD’s I’ve seen thus far this stands out as one of my favourite matches. It had a big match feel from the outset, and at every turn I felt like I was watching something unpredictable, intriguing…and like something I’d never seen before. These two were so badly mis-matched it had the potential to become Big Show/Rey Mysterio levels of incompatible, but they worked together quite superbly. The way they made Daizee’s offence credible and believable without damaging Kong at all was a joy to behold. The drama and tension became almost unbearable as Kong brutalised her ragdoll opponent at every turn but simply couldn’t suppress The Haze’s fight and determination…building to a sensational closing stretch that had the building absolutely rocking. Kong/MsChif is the match that gets all the hype from this taping but for me this was better. Kong was Kong, and Daizee delivered the performance of a lifetime too.

Nikki Roxx vs Sara Del Rey
This is the match Nikki has spent her entire SHIMMER career fighting for. She has been desperate for a spot in the main event and finally earned this one via a four show winning streak (defeating Lorelei Lee, Lacey, Malia Hosaka and Tiana Ringer) and challenging the winner of Volume 9’s main event. That would be the imposing Sara Del Rey, who thus far has only sustained one singles loss in nine shows. That came at Volume 8 when she lost to Mercedes Martinez, but she rebounded strongly at the last show by taking down Cheerleader Melissa. With the SHIMMER Title Tournament on the horizon, Sara has to be considered a hot favourite, but Nikki knows a win here may deliver a devastating two-punch combo of derailing Del Rey’s championship aspirations and also giving Roxx all the momentum in the world.

I think SHIMMER are trying to parallel Paul London’s 2002/2003 rise from enhancement talent to main events in ROH with Nikki, except (as lack of conviction and snap on the opening wristlock will tell you) she’s nowhere near as good. She is also significantly inferior to Del Rey, who bosses the first few minutes without breaking sweat. The pace is slow at first, and that helps Roxx find her feet in her first main event – gradually working her way into the match and starting to pose questions to the more seasoned Death Rey. Nikki shows some of her Mexican seasoning with a few lucha armdrags – with such success that Sara is actually forced from the ring. Sara is pissed at that (particularly since she actually LIVED in Mexico for some time the previous year) and cranks up the aggression herself – driving her opponent out of the ring with a tilta-whirl backbreaker. Roxx’s inexperience shows again as she ducks her head getting back into the ring, exposing it to a Del Rey hip attack in the ropes. Having seen Nikki’s success when working fast, SDR sets about slowing things right down. She crushes the air from her lungs with butt splashes then pursues her across the ring pounding the chest some more with vicious chops. Camel clutch locked in to inflict more damage on the torso and make it even harder for her to get her wind. Roxx dodges a senton splash and quickly goes on the offensive – sprinting across the ring to hit a dropkick. Proving that she isn’t going to be a pushover at the top of the card, Nikki receipts Sara by pummelling her with the same chops and kicks to the stomach that she herself had endured minutes earlier. She breaks out the Boston Crab even though she can’t necessarily bridge back as far as she’d like due to her own injuries. I really like how Roxx is mirroring Del Rey’s offensive tactics here. On the one hand it’s uber-aggressive and shows real tenacity, and on the other hand it emphasises her inexperience at this level as she feels the need to mimic the more experienced competitor. That theme culminates as both women charge at each other and hit the exact same mafia kick to the chest at the same time! MAFIA KICK BY SARA! NO SOLD! MAFIA KICK BY NIKKI! NO SOLD! BIG BOOT DUEL! Nikki makes a mistake again, getting carried away in that and getting foolishly knocked backwards so SDR can hit her senton bomb. BRIDGING GERMAN SUPLEX! Both woman have bad backs and are really struggling. Flying crossbody by Roxx, but it just gets 2 and probably hurts her as much as Sara. Del Rey tries a powerbomb…and gets COUNTERED with a rana! Another mistake by Nikki – she tries the same hurricanrana again and EATS THE POWERBOMB! ROYAL BUTTERFLY! Sara wins at 17:56

Rating - **** - Definitely not the strongest or most exciting of SHIMMER main events…but I still really enjoyed this. I liked that they told a rather different story to that which you usually see in a wrestling match. Sure on the surface they did a standard ‘work each other’s backs’ plot…but looking a little deeper, there were some really subtle nods to the backstory behind this with Sara as the dominant alpha female and Nikki Roxx looking to make her mark in her first main event. The first ten SHIMMER Volumes have been all about learning and improving for Roxx – and that journey was embodied in this match. She spent the early going looking significantly inferior (like her early matches), but gradually grew in confidence (as she did after her performance against Amazing Kong). At every turn she was trying to make a statement that she belongs at the top level – be it through trying to out-lucha Del Rey or stealing her tactics halfway through. But she made (kayfabe) rookie errors throughout the match, really making the point that this was a talented kid who had risen from nowhere to elite level competition. In the end she put up a strong fight but made just one mistake too many and paid for it with defeat via the Royal Butterfly. This won’t be for everyone, but as ever, I am totally into matches that make a statement, tell a story or really try to do something different (and do it well). Much like Kong/Daizee, this FELT different to the vast majority of SHIMMER’s matches so far – and I can’t help but admire that.

Tape Rating - *** - For starters, this was a step up from Volume 9. Although there was still some weaker stuff, we did get a more consistent and valuable undercard than we got from the last show. I can’t pretend I’m not a little disappointed in the Lacey/Melissa match though, which only got ten minutes, despite this DVD clocking in at less than two and a half hours. Despite that setback, this show was still a more fulfilling experience than the top heavy V9 DVD which had a couple of great headliners but a whole bunch of nothing underneath it. Here we had a decent Ringer/Black match, the aforementioned Lacey/Melissa contest and an intense little fight between Allison Danger and Cindy Rogers which barely scratched the surface of what their rivalry looks capable of. Add that to an intelligent main event and one of the best SHIMMER matches thus far (Kong/Haze) and this is an easy recommend.
